PAHF USA Delegation Travels to Nigeria

July 2004 (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) …  In July, a delegation of PAHF USA Board members and top supporters traveled to Nigeria to inspect the site of the Auto-Disable Syringe Factory and to raise support for PAHF in the local public and private sectors.

The mission, which consisted of PAHF USA Board members Mr. Yuichi Ishimaru, Dr. Arese Carrington, and General Roger Blunt — and PAHF supporters Mr. C. Payne Lucas and Ambassador Walter Carrington —was joined in Nigeria by PAHF Nigeria Board members Chief Paul Achimugu and Chief Phillip Asiodu.

On Sunday, July 18, the delegation traveled to Port Harcourt to visit the site of the Auto-Disable Syringe Factory. The land was donated by the Rivers State Government through Governor Peter Odili. The Rivers State Government also carried out the preparations of the site, including clearing, fencing, and building an access road. PAHF’s delegation thanked Dr. Odili for his government’s in-kind contribution to PAHF, which has an estimated value at more than US $1 million. Dr. Odili pledged additional support to PAHF as the factory construction commences.

While in Port Harcourt, the delegation also toured the Eleme Petrochemicals Company, a potential source of the main raw materials needed for the production of syringes.

Taking the opportunity of being in Nigeria, the Board met with key private corporations and government groups to raise support for the project. Continuing on to Lagos, the PAHF delegation met with several major companies to discuss potential partnerships.

The delegation next traveled to Abuja where they met with PAHF Nigeria’s Grand Patron, H.E. President Obasanjo, and the Inter-Ministerial Committee, a group organized to coordinate Nigerian national government support for the project. In Abuja, the delegation also met with the representatives of the Federal Ministry of Health to confer on working together to ensure that the syringes reach their targeted end-users.
